As we have discussed about layout of the power system in our previous article. 

Now let's go to learn about line supports. 

What is a line support? 


A line support is the pole or tower which is used for supporting the overhead conductor.

As these overhead conductors can be classified in two ways: -

Distribution overhead conductor 
Transmission overhead conductor. 

So for both these overhead conductor different types of structures are used. 
 

Requirement of a line support: -


The main requirements are: -

  • The structure used, should be cheap in cost.So that the overall cost of transmission and distribution can be reduced.  

  • The structure should be able to withstand against all mechanical stresses. In other words, we can say that it should be mechanically strong. 

  • The pole should have low maintenance cost and longer life.  

  • It should be light in weight. so that it can be easily erected.

Types of structure or line supports: - 


There are various types of line supports but the most common types are: -

  1. Wooden pole
  2. Steel pole 
  3. RCC pole 
  4. Lattice steel tower. 

1. Wooden pole: -


Wooden poles are widely used for low voltage distributions in rural (ग्रामीण)  areas. 
These are made up of sal or chir about the height of 11m. They are embedded into the ground about 1/6th part of its total height. 

Advantages of wooden poles: -


  • As these poles are made up of wood, therefore the weight of these types of pole is less and can be erected easily into the ground. 

  • These poles are cheap in cost as compared to other types. 

Disadvantage of wooden pole: -


  • These types of poles only used for low voltage distribution purpose. 

  • Periodical inspection required in wooden poles for any type of breakage. 

  • As these are made up of wood, therefore the life of these types of poles is less. 

2. Steel poles: -


As these poles are made up of steel therefore there mechanical strength is high as compared to a wooden pole. 

Due to high mechanical strength these poles can be used for large spans.  

As they have high mechanical strength and larger spans therefore they can be used for distribution purpose and for transmission purpose of high voltage up to 33KV. 

Advantages of steel poles: -


  • They have high mechanical strength. 

  • They can be used for distribution as well as transmission purpose with larger spans. 

  • They have longer life as compared to wooden poles. 

Disadvantages of steel poles: -


  • As these types of pole are made up of steel therefore their cost is high as compared to a wooden pole. 

3. R.C.C. pole: -


These types of poles are made up of reinforced cement concrete. Due to which they have very high mechanical strength. 

Due to their high mechanical strength they can be used for larger span. As these poles are made up of concrete, therefore their transportation is difficult due to heavy weight. 

Sometimes holes are provided in these types of poles for climbing purposes which also reduce its weight. 

These poles are used for distribution purpose in urban (शहरी) areas because it gives a good appearance.

Advantages of R.C.C. poles: -


  • >They have very high mechanical strength. 

  • >They have longer life. 

  • >They require no maintenance. 

Disadvantages of R.C.C. poles: -


  • >The transportation of this type of pole is difficult. 

  • >They are heavy in weight. 

  • > Their initial cost is high. 

4. Lattice towers: -


Lattice towers are mainly used for the transmission purpose of high voltage from 11KV to 66KV and above. 

As on high voltage, high clearance required between conductors and ground, which is provided by these type of towers easily. 

These towers are divided into two parts according to the transmission line: -

Tangent tower: - 


When the transmission line run straight, then tangent tower is used. 

Deviation tower: - 


When the transmission line takes any type of turn at that moment these types of tower is used. 

Advantages of lattice towers: -


  • 1. They have very high mechanical strength.

  • 2.They can be used for transmission purpose at very high voltage. 

  • 3. They have longer span. 

  • 4. They have very long life. 

Disadvantage of lattice towers: -


  • They require periodically painting for protection against corrosion. 

NOTE: -


The distance between two poles or two structures is known as span.
